Toyota to Expand EV Charger Network at Dealerships Amid Slow Adoption in Japan
Tokyo, Japan – Toyota Motor Corp. is accelerating the installation of high-speed electric vehicle (EV) chargers at its dealerships across Japan, aiming for a total of 500 units by the end of the fiscal year in March 2026. This expansion builds upon the existing network of 390 fast chargers and approximately 3,800 standard-speed chargers currently available at Toyota dealerships nationwide.
The move comes as EV adoption in Japan lags behind other markets and initial rollout targets for charging infrastructure have not been met. Toyota originally pledged to equip all 5,000 of its domestic dealerships with high-speed chargers by 2025, a goal now appearing less certain. CEO koji Sato has indicated the company may revise its target of selling 1.5 million EVs annually by 2026.
Competitors Nissan Motor co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. are further ahead in dealership charging infrastructure, with high-speed chargers installed at roughly 90% of Nissan locations and 94% of Mitsubishi outlets.
Toyota’s expansion supports Japan’s national EV infrastructure goals, which include deploying 30,000 high-speed charging stations by 2030. The goverment anticipates approximately half of the country’s 20,000 automobile dealerships will offer fast chargers by that time.
