Toyota EV Charger Expansion: Japan’s Slow Rollout

Toyota to Expand EV Charger Network at Dealerships Amid Slow Adoption in Japan

Tokyo, Japan – Toyota Motor Corp. is accelerating the⁢ installation of high-speed electric vehicle (EV)⁢ chargers at its dealerships across ⁣Japan, aiming for a total of 500 units by the end⁤ of the fiscal year in‍ March 2026. This expansion builds upon the existing network of 390 fast ‍chargers and approximately 3,800 standard-speed chargers currently available at ⁤Toyota dealerships nationwide.

The move comes as EV adoption in Japan lags behind other markets and initial rollout targets for charging infrastructure have not been met. Toyota originally ⁢pledged to equip all 5,000⁢ of its domestic dealerships with high-speed ⁣chargers by 2025, a goal‍ now ⁣appearing less certain. CEO koji‌ Sato has ‍indicated the company may revise its⁣ target of selling 1.5 ⁢million EVs‌ annually by 2026.

Competitors Nissan Motor co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. are further ahead in dealership charging infrastructure, with high-speed chargers installed at roughly 90% of Nissan locations and 94% of Mitsubishi outlets. ‍

Toyota’s expansion supports Japan’s national EV infrastructure goals, which include deploying 30,000⁣ high-speed charging stations by 2030. The goverment anticipates approximately half of ‍the country’s 20,000 automobile dealerships will offer fast chargers by that time.
