September 7th Eclipse to Paint the Moon a Striking copper Red, Visible Across Much of the Globe
A total lunar eclipse will grace the skies on September 7, 2025, transforming the moon into a dramatic copper red hue-a spectacle anticipated by billions worldwide. Approximately 6.2 billion people, roughly 77% of the global population, will have a full view of all stages of the eclipse, while an even larger 7.1 billion, or 88%, will witness at least a portion of the penumbral phase.
This celestial event holds particular interest due to the moonS proximity to Earth during the eclipse. Occurring just 2.7 days after the lunar perigee-the point in its orbit closest to our planet-the moon will appear slightly larger than usual, though the difference may be subtle for most observers. The true draw, though, lies in the depth of the Earth’s shadow cast upon the moon, with approximately 36% of its diameter passing through the darkest region.
This significant shadow coverage promises a richly colored eclipse, with sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere expected to create the striking ”blood moon” phenomenon. The process occurs as the atmosphere refracts sunlight,bending it towards the moon and imbuing it with a reddish glow.
The eclipse will be prominently visible across Saudi Arabia and the wider Arab world, offering a readily observable event with the naked eye or through telescopes. As noted by the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, opportunities to witness such a rare and visually arresting eclipse are infrequent.
