Nintendo has scheduled the release of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream for April 16, 2026, on the Nintendo Switch system.
First announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation on March 27, 2025, the title marks the first new entry in the series in over a decade. Known in Japan as Tomodachi Collection: Exciting Life, the game casts the player as the caretaker of an island inhabited by Mii characters. These characters can be based on the player’s own family and friends or created as original characters.
The game features two primary methods for Mii creation. Players can use a “From Scratch” system to manage specific profile details, including face types, hairstyles, and eyes, or utilize a “Get Help” option that generates characters based on answers to a series of questions. Once populated, the island’s daily activities are tracked via MiiNews, a station that provides daily reports and updates on significant events. Players interact with their residents by providing food, clothing, and treasures, while as well managing the characters’ relationships, and personalities.
Technical specifications confirmed by Nintendo include a registration limit of 70 Miis per island. The game also introduces a mechanic where married couples can have babies regardless of their gender. Local wireless connectivity allows players to exchange Miis and Palette House workshop creations with other nearby systems.
Regarding hardware compatibility, Nintendo confirmed the software is playable on both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2. While the core content remains identical across both platforms, the Nintendo Switch 2 version offers reduced loading times. The game will run at 1080p resolution when undocked on the Nintendo Switch 2, though it does not support “mouse mode” or the system’s handheld mode boost function.
User data is managed on a per-user basis, meaning save data and islands are not shared between different users registered on a single console, and each user is limited to one save file. While Nintendo has placed restrictions on the sharing of clips and screenshots, the company has stated it condones the sharing of posts about the game on social media.
The title is currently available for pre-order, and a free demo has been released on the eShop.
