Madrid – Former footballer and social media personality Tote Fernández broke down in tears during a recent episode of the TVE cooking competition Top Chef: Dulces y Famosos, revealing a deep-seated pressure to consistently prove his worth. The emotional moment occurred after receiving feedback on his dessert from the demonstrate’s judges, prompting intervention from chef Eva Arguiñano.

The incident unfolded as Fernández, visibly upset, attributed his reaction to “frustration” and a tendency toward self-criticism. “I get angry with myself, given that I always put a lot of pressure on myself in life, in football and in everything, and I don’t like to fail,” he explained, according to reports. Arguiñano responded by praising his perform and reframing his perspective, stating, “You haven’t failed. I’m going to your house, you present me with this dessert, I’m going to eat it and enjoy it.” She further emphasized that increasing difficulty is inherent to the competition, adding, “Each program we raise the level and the demand, but that is not a failure.”

Fernández’s emotional response stemmed from a history of feeling the need to constantly validate himself. “Throughout my life I have had to prove more than others, and there was always people who didn’t trust me or, when I failed, they pointed the finger at me,” he recounted, his voice reportedly filled with emotion. This feeling, he confessed, continues to influence his performance on the show. “That’s why I always have the feeling of having to prove that I am the best and that I can win,” he said.

Top Chef: Dulces y Famosos, currently airing on TVE’s La 1 channel, features sixteen celebrities competing in a pastry challenge. The show is hosted by Paula Vázquez and judged by Paco Rocero, Eva Arguiñano, and Osvaldo Gross. The program premiered on February 15, 2026, and is scheduled to run for ten episodes, concluding on March 28, 2026. According to El País, the show has been praised for its casting, judging panel, and Vázquez’s hosting.

The competition includes a diverse range of contestants, including television personality Belén Esteban, actor Luis Merlo, and singer Natalia. Merlo, as noted in an interview with El Confidencial, has been balancing his participation in the show with commitments to theater and film projects, requiring early morning starts and demanding schedules. The show is not recommended for viewers under the age of seven.

As the competition progresses, the contestants will face increasingly complex challenges, testing their skills and resilience. The outcome of the competition, and whether Fernández can overcome his self-imposed pressure, remains to be seen.
