Tonje Frigstad and Birk Ruud Open Up About Bali Life and Wedding Plans
Freestyle skier Birk Ruud and his fiancée, influencer Tonje Frigstad, relocated their base from Norway to Bali in early August, balancing Ruud’s international training schedule with island life, Dagbladet reported.
Relocating the Base to Bali
The couple, who became engaged in the summer of last year, packed their bags at the beginning of August and headed east to establish a temporary home in Indonesia. Ruud, who won the final in freeski slopestyle at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics earlier in the year, requires access to winter training climates across the Southern Hemisphere. This professional demand takes him frequently to Australia and New Zealand, leaving Frigstad managing periods alone on the island.
Frigstad described the initial transition as significant, moving from daily routines shared entirely together to managing meals and schedules independently. Over the course of three months on the island, she has built a local network for company during Ruud’s travel periods, finding the experience to be a positive opportunity for personal independence.

Frigstad Plans Traditional Norwegian Wedding
Alongside the tropical relocation, the pair has progressed with long-term plans for their wedding, scheduled to take place in under two years. Frigstad noted that organization previously moved slowly due to their constant travel schedules, but recent weeks brought more structured preparations.
And for the first time so I manage to see myself as a bride in my head. That I have not managed until now.
While the couple enjoys their time abroad, Frigstad stated that the wedding ceremony will likely take place in Norway. She expressed a desire for a traditional Norwegian setting featuring mountains and fjords rather than an overseas ceremony.
Reflecting on the Limits of Permanent Relocation
After spending three months of their planned six-month stay in Indonesia, Frigstad acknowledged experiencing moments of homesickness. While she characterized the daily routine of surfing and tropical climate as a dream life for a temporary period, she ruled out any permanent move.
Viewing pictures of friends on mountain cabin trips in Norway triggered cravings for crisp northern air, reinforcing her perspective on living abroad. The lifestyle offers a valued contrast, but the couple maintains that returning to Norway remains the definitive plan once their half-year stay concludes.
