Tokyo launches “Premium College” to Empower Lifelong Learning in Era of 100-year Lifespans
TOKYO – Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) is pioneering a new approach to aging populations with the launch of “Tokyo Premium College,” a lifelong learning initiative designed to foster both skill development and social connection for residents. Governor Yuriko Koike recently highlighted the program’s importance, emphasizing that extended healthy lifespans-perhaps reaching 120 years-require not only knowledge and skills, but also strong human relationships for a fulfilling life.
The college addresses a growing societal challenge: how to support active and engaged citizens as life expectancy increases. This initiative isn’t simply about acquiring new abilities; it’s about combating social isolation and providing purpose in later life. The TMG views Tokyo’s Premium College as a potential model for other regions and countries grappling with similar demographic shifts, and its future development and policy impact will be closely monitored.
one student, Ms. Ide Michi, is using the college to explore a question sparked by her experiences living abroad: why traditional markets have largely disappeared from daily life in Japan, replaced by supermarkets. She is currently examining the current state of markets within Tokyo, alongside fellow student Ms.Shimada Takeo.
The program’s success is already generating interest, with plans for expansion underway. Future articles will profile inspiring alumni and showcase the diverse paths graduates are pursuing after completing their studies at Tokyo Premium College. Further details can be found here.
