Xbox Chief Declares Console Exclusivity “Outdated”
REDMOND, WA – May 16, 2024 - In a notable shift in strategy, Xbox CEO Sarah Bond has stated that the era of console-exclusive games is coming to an end. Bond described console exclusivity as an “outdated” concept in a recent interview with Mashable, signaling a future where Microsoft’s gaming titles will be available across multiple platforms. This follows the successful launch of Forza Horizon on PlayStation, a move previously considered unlikely for a flagship Xbox franchise.
The change in approach reflects a growing recognition of the benefits of broader accessibility for gamers. Bond highlighted the success of massively popular, multi-platform titles like Call of Duty, Minecraft, Fortnite, and roblox, noting that these games “drive the gaming community” by providing spaces where players can connect irrespective of their chosen device.
“the biggest games in the world are available everywhere,” Bond told Mashable. “You look at Call of Duty, you look at Minecraft, you look at Fortnite, you look at Roblox … that’s actually what really drives the gaming community. It’s where people gather. And the idea of locking it down to one store or one device is outdated for most people.”
Bond emphasized the importance of cross-platform play, stating, “You’ll be able to play with your friends anywhere, regardless of what they’re using.” She connected this vision to Microsoft’s efforts with devices like the ROG Ally X, cloud gaming, and customary PC and console platforms, framing them as complementary ways to access games.
The announcement marks a departure from previous messaging, where Xbox executives had indicated that only a limited number of titles would be released on competing platforms. The move is expected to expand the reach of Xbox’s gaming portfolio and foster a more inclusive gaming ecosystem.
