Subaru Fuels Revival Hopes with First Look at “Mysterious STI Concept“
TOKYO – Subaru Corporation is set to unveil a new ”STI concept” vehicle,igniting speculation about a potential return of the iconic WRX STI. The declaration comes amid fervent anticipation from enthusiasts following the discontinuation of the performance sedan in both Japan (2019) and North America (2022).
The move signals a possible shift in Subaru’s strategy, particularly as the company navigates increasingly stringent global fuel efficiency regulations - Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) – and the industry-wide transition towards electrification. The WRX STI’s demise was directly linked to these challenges, with delays in developing electrified alternatives contributing to the end of orders in Japan. Now, the unveiling of this concept suggests Subaru is re-evaluating its performance vehicle portfolio.
The original Impreza WRX debuted in 1992, quickly establishing Subaru’s motorsports credentials. The addition of the STI version in 1994 further cemented this reputation, culminating in a remarkable three consecutive WRC manufacturer’s titles from 1995-1997. This success propelled Subaru to global recognition, inextricably linking the brand with rally-inspired performance.
Subsequent generations of the Impreza WRX/STI – distinguished by their ”round eyes,” “watery eyes,” and “hawk eyes” (2000) - continued to evolve, with the third generation (2007) initially appearing as a hatchback (GRB) before adding a sedan (GVB). The fourth generation (VAB, 2014) marked a turning point, rebranding as the independant “WRX STI” model.
The upcoming concept’s unveiling is expected to provide clues about Subaru’s future direction for high-performance vehicles. Details remain scarce, but initial imagery released alongside the announcement features a vehicle dubbed the “Performance B Concept,” hinting at a focus on boxer engine technology.The reveal is keenly awaited by a dedicated fanbase left disappointed by the recent cessation of WRX STI production.
