WhatsApp Gives Users Control Over media Quality to Combat Storage Issues
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – WhatsApp is now empowering users to manage smartphone storage by allowing them to choose the quality of incoming photos adn videos. The new feature, recently rolled out to iOS users after being available on Android for some time, addresses a growing frustration as the popular messaging app’s high-definition media sharing capabilities consume increasing amounts of device space.
The update shifts control from senders to recipients, meaning users can now opt to receive standard quality media rather of automatically downloading high-resolution files. This change is particularly relevant as WhatsApp’s recent addition of HD quality sharing has exacerbated storage concerns for many. Users can access the setting within the app under “Storage and Data,” selecting their preferred “Automatic Download Quality.” While HD images can still be downloaded manually later, choosing standard quality will conserve space by default.
Beyond download quality, WhatsApp also offers an option to prevent automatically saving incoming media duplicates to the smartphone’s gallery, providing another layer of storage management. This dual approach aims to give users greater agency over their device’s storage, mitigating the annoyance of constant “storage full” notifications.
