CHARLOTTESVILLE, va. – The University of Virginia football team exploded for a program-record 708 yards of total offense in a 13-9 victory over william & mary on Saturday at Scott stadium, marking the Cavaliers‘ seventh consecutive win in the series.
The offensive outburst, fueled by a dominant running game, overshadowed a defensive struggle were Virginia yielded a touchdown late in the third quarter and a safety in the fourth when a snap sailed out of the end zone. Despite the late scores by the Tribe,UVA secured the win thanks too a 97-yard touchdown run by Mike Waylee and eight points from kicker Will Bettridge-two field goals and an extra point.
This record-breaking performance arrives as Virginia begins a challenging stretch of games, including its inaugural matchup against Stanford next Saturday. The Cavaliers (2-1) will open ACC play against the Cardinal at 7:30 p.m. on ACC Network, following a previously non-conference game against NC State on September 6th that did not factor into league standings.Stanford enters the contest with a 0-2 record after Saturday’s game against boston College.
William & Mary’s head coach, mike London, previously led the Virginia program for six seasons, from 2010 to 2015.
