Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan‘s Pioneering 1957 Collaboration, Getz Meets Mulligan, to Receive Deluxe vinyl Reissue
A landmark recording that captured a unique musical moment-the first time saxophone titans Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan played primary horns together-will be reissued on vinyl October 24, 2025, as part of Verve Records’ acclaimed Acoustic Sounds series. Getz Meets Mulligan, originally released in 1957,has long been celebrated for its innovative instrumentation and the interplay between two giants of cool jazz.
This reissue offers audiophiles a chance to experience the album with renewed fidelity, mastered from original analog tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound under the supervision of Chad Kassem, CEO of acoustic Sounds. The six-track album features Getz on baritone sax and mulligan on tenor for its opening trio of tracks (“Let’s Fall in love,” “Anything Goes,” and “Too Close for comfort”), accompanied by Lou Levy on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Stan Levey on drums-marking the only instance the duo recorded in a quintet format.
Getz and Mulligan were central figures in the cool jazz movement, a sophisticated post-WWII style that evolved from bebop and big band traditions. Mulligan gained renown for his work with Chet Baker and compositions like “walkin’ Shoes” and “Five Brothers,” while Getz is widely credited with bringing bossa nova to a broader American audience with hits like “The Girl From Ipanema” (1964).
The Verve Acoustic Sounds series is dedicated to preserving classic jazz recordings with high-quality vinyl releases. Other titles in the series include albums by John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Nina Simone. Previous releases have also featured Getz (Sweet Rain,Getz Au Go Go) and Mulligan (Mulligan’s Night Lights).
