BATON ROUGE, La. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team sends a contingent to the ITA South Sectional Championships, hosted by LSU November 6-9, with hopes of securing additional bids to the NCAA Championships. This tournament represents the final qualifying chance for singles and doubles teams to earn a spot in the national tournament, taking place November 18-23 at the USTA national Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Four Commodores – Célia-Belle Mohr & Sophia Webster (doubles), Bridget Stammel and Mia Yamakita (singles) – already clinched NCAA berths at the ITA Regional Championships. Now, Vanderbilt aims to expand that number.Junior Valeria Ray will compete for an NCAA singles qualification, while the duos of Ray and Stammel, ranked No. 37 nationally, and freshmen Erin Pearce and Mia Yamakita, ranked No. 43, will vie for doubles qualification.
Both Vanderbilt doubles teams reached the ITA Regional Championships in Knoxville but did not initially qualify.Pearce and Yamakita narrowly missed out, falling to Tennessee’s Catherine Aulia and Leyla britez Risso after a strong showing. Ray and Stammel were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Tennessee’s Francesca Mattioli and Maeve Thornton.
Competition begins Tuesday, November 7th, with singles play at 9 a.m. CT, followed by doubles at 3 p.m. CT.
