Jakarta, Indonesia – Following questioning by Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday, prominent cleric Ustaz Khalid Zeed Abdullah Basalamah alleges he was misled by travel agency PT muhibbah Mulia Tourism regarding his Hajj pilgrimage arrangements.Basalamah claims he initially intended to travel via the Hajj Furoda system but was offered a purportedly “official” visa through Muhibbah, believing it to be a legitimate special quota from the Ministry of Religion.
Basalamah, along with 122 other pilgrims from the Uhud Tour, had previously secured arrangements through the Majesty of the Majesty Travel Service. He stated that Muhibbah’s offer presented the chance to utilize a special visa, described as an official quota, leading him to register as a pilgrim with the agency. He received facilities akin to a special Hajj, including direct access to VIP services.
The cleric’s statement comes amidst a broader investigation into alleged irregularities within the Hajj travel industry. The KPK has been scrutinizing several travel agencies suspected of exploiting Hajj pilgrims and potentially engaging in corrupt practices. Basalamah’s testimony could provide crucial insight into the operations of PT Muhibbah Mulia Tourism and the extent to which pilgrims were misled regarding their Hajj arrangements. He previously missed a scheduled KPK summons, citing prior commitments.
Basalamah arrived at the KPK Red and White Building at 11:04 WIB on Tuesday, accompanied by four individuals. He was dressed in all-black attire. The KPK has not yet released an official statement regarding the outcome of the questioning or any potential charges.
