Trump Advisor Richard Grenell Clashes with German Minister Over AI Criticism
BERLIN – former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell has publicly criticized German Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer following a speech delivered Tuesday at the Frankfurt Book Fair, where Weimer warned of artificial intelligence posing a ”massive threat to art” and likened its impact to “spiritual vampirism.” Grenell,a close ally of former President Donald Trump,has repeatedly commented on German political events and frequently clashed with German officials during his tenure as ambassador.
Weimer, in his address, described how AI could “tear apart” the world of literature, asserting that algorithms are now capable of operating ”smarter, more complex, more creative and, above all, much, much faster than the supposed miracle of the human brain.” He further accused AI companies of exploiting the creative output of artists,calling it “digital colonialism” and a “raid” on global cultures,reducing artistic achievement to “mere booty.” The Minister of State for culture warned of a “gold rush atmosphere” in Silicon Valley and Shenzhen,where cultures are being “degraded into suppliers of raw materials.”
