New U.S.Ambassador to Dominican Republic Makes Historic Cathedral First Stop
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – October 30, 2025 – Leah Francis Campos officially began her duties as the United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic today with a symbolic visit to the Primate Cathedral of America in Santo Domingo. The newly appointed ambassador prioritized a stop at the historic cathedral instantly upon her arrival in the country, signaling a commitment to cultural understanding and diplomatic engagement.
Campos’ arrival, initially planned for last Wednesday, was delayed due to the impact of Tropical Storm Melissa on Dominican territory, as explained by Dominican Chancellor Roberto Álvarez. Despite the postponement, the ambassador expressed her eagerness to begin her post and highlighted the significance of her first visit.
The visit to the cathedral underscores Campos’ background and values. Originally from Arizona and raised in a Catholic family she describes as “of patriots,” her career has spanned both intelligence and political spheres. Prior to her appointment, she served as a case officer with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and later as a senior advisor for the Western Hemisphere in the United states House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee.
Following this initial gesture, Ambassador Campos is scheduled to formally present her credentials to President Luis Abinader at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mirex), officially commencing her diplomatic functions within the Dominican Republic. This ceremony will mark the formal beginning of her tenure and solidify the United states’ commitment to its relationship with the Dominican Republic.
