US Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement Wednesday, May 15, urging Hamas to immediately cease fire and stop targeting Palestinian civilians in gaza.
CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper specifically called for Hamas to “immediately halt violence and stop shooting at innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza – both in the parts of Gaza controlled by Hamas and in those protected by the israel Defense Forces behind the yellow Line.” The “Yellow Line” refers to the initial israeli withdrawal line outlined in a recent ceasefire map released by the White House, indicating areas were Israeli forces remain present.
Cooper stated,”This is a historic opportunity for peace.Hamas must seize it by stopping attacks, strictly adhering to President Trump’s 20-point peace plan, and beginning disarmament without delay.”
CENTCOM indicated it has communicated its concerns to regional mediators, who have agreed to collaborate with the United States to enforce peace and protect civilians in Gaza.
The call for a halt in violence follows recent clashes between Hamas and rival groups within Gaza, raising concerns about the security situation following Israel‘s partial withdrawal from the territory.
