DETROIT – Toyota Motor corporation is recalling 280,664 vehicles across multiple models due to a potential defect in the fuel pump, which could lead to engine stalling and an increased risk of a crash. The recall, announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Governance (NHTSA) on April 26, 2024, affects vehicles sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This recall underscores ongoing concerns about fuel pump reliability in certain Toyota models and highlights the company’s commitment to addressing safety issues proactively. The affected vehicles may experience engine stalling while driving or even while parked, perhaps creating a risky situation for drivers and increasing the risk of an accident. Toyota will notify owners and offer a free repair to replace the fuel pump relay.
Which Vehicles Are affected?
The recall encompasses a range of Toyota and Lexus models from the 2018-2020 model years. Specifically, the following vehicles are included:
* Toyota 4Runner: 46,349 vehicles
* Toyota Camry: 109,779 vehicles
* Toyota Highlander: 67,329 vehicles
* Toyota Tacoma: 57,107 vehicles
* Lexus ES 350: 10,100 vehicles
the issue stems from a fuel pump relay that may contain cracks, potentially causing it to fail. NHTSA reports that Toyota first began investigating the issue in February 2024, identifying a higher-than-expected failure rate in the fuel pump relays.
What Should Owners Do?
Toyota will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles starting May 28, 2024. owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a Toyota dealership for a free inspection and, if necessary, a replacement of the fuel pump relay. The repair is expected to take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
