Fantasy RPG ‘The Wayward Realms’ Switches to Proprietary Engine, Delays Release
OnceLost Games has announced a significant shift in development for its upcoming fantasy RPG, The Wayward Realms, opting to move away from the Unreal Engine in favor of a new, proprietary engine. According to a recent Steam blog post, the studio believes this change “positions us to deliver a far better game.”
The decision follows feedback from fans, and OnceLost states the new engine will allow the game to achieve over 30 FPS on “decade old laptops without dedicated GPUs” and the original nintendo Switch.developers also highlighted a map “four times the size of Manhattan” that loads in under one second, a full engine load time of 300 milliseconds – which has “already more than doubled our development speed” - and plans for full community modding support.
Though, this transition will impact the game’s release schedule. Kickstarter backers will now receive access in June 2026, with a public Early Access period planned for the months following. Further updates are expected beginning December 3rd.
