December 1st, 2023 – Fans of dark comedy can now stream the remake of the 1989 classic “The War of the Roses” on Disney+ today. The film, titled “The Battle of the Roses,” premiered in German cinemas on August 28th and features Benedict Cumberbatch and Oscar winner Olivia Colman in leading roles.

Cumberbatch and Colman portray Theo, an architect, and Ivy, a chef, whose seemingly perfect life unravels after a series of professional setbacks shift the power dynamic in their relationship.
The original 1989 film, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, gained notoriety for its depiction of a particularly bitter divorce. the remake, while not matching the “ruthless harshness of the original,” according to FILMSTARTS, has earned a strong 4 out of 5 stars from the publication. Editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen praised Cumberbatch and Colman, stating: “Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are simply terrific – both as a loving couple and as bitter opponents who gradually throw all British restraint overboard in their very personal War of the Roses. Mercilessly funny and surprisingly touching at the same time.”
“The Battle of the Roses” follows Theo and Ivy’s journey from a chance encounter in a London restaurant to a life in the USA, and ultimately, to a “merciless war of roses in which no dish remains intact…” as their marriage collapses.
