Tesla Windscreen Melted in South Australia, Potential Meteorite Impact Under Investigation
Augusta Highway, South Australia – A Tesla vehicle traveling on the Augusta Highway in South Australia experienced a startling incident on October 28, 2025, when an unidentified object struck its windscreen, causing localized melting of the glass. The South Australian Museum is currently investigating the possibility that the object was a meteorite, a finding that could represent a world first if confirmed.
The incident occurred as the vehicle was driving along the highway. The driver reported a sudden impact, and subsequent examination revealed a small area of the windscreen had partially melted. Mineralogist Kieran Meaney of the south Australian Museum explained, “The really unusual thing is that the glass of his windscreen has actually melted a little bit; there was a lot of heat in whatever hit the windscreen.” The museum is initially analyzing the windscreen for embedded particles to determine the object’s composition.
If initial analysis suggests a space origin, a search for the meteorite itself will commence. Scientists note that while meteorites are typically cold upon landing due to surface ablation during atmospheric entry, sufficient velocity on impact can generate intense heat through the conversion of kinetic energy into thermal energy.
However, investigators are also considering option explanations, including space junk, debris from aircraft, or a terrestrial rock. “It may be the case once we investigate further,we find out it’s something different, but at the moment [a meteorite is] the theory we are working with,” Meaney stated. Shoudl a meteorite be confirmed, a ground search of the impact area will be undertaken to locate the remaining fragments.
