## Swalwell Enters California Governor‘s Race, Leaning on Anti-Trump Profile
Representative Eric Swalwell has announced his candidacy for Governor of California, positioning himself as a key figure to challenge teh policies of the current presidential administration. Swalwell rose to national prominence through his vocal opposition to former President Trump, a stance that is expected to resonate with California’s Democratic base, especially after voters overwhelmingly approved a new congressional map in November designed to limit the president’s power heading into next year’s midterm elections.
Swalwell previously mounted a brief campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination and served as a house impeachment manager during Trump’s second impeachment trial, focusing on the former president’s role in the January 6th, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
During his eight years on the House Intelligence Committee, including a role on the CIA subcommittee, Swalwell established himself as a leading Democratic voice on national security and election interference. He is also a founding member of the Future Forum caucus, dedicated to representing the interests of young voters in Congress.
The gubernatorial race currently lacks a clear frontrunner following the decisions of Vice President Kamala Harris and Senator Alex Padilla to not pursue the position. While former Representative Katie Porter initially led in early polls, she has faced scrutiny regarding her temperament after threatening to walk out of a local television interview and reports surfaced of her berating a staff member. Porter has apologized for her behavior, but Democratic strategists are reportedly seeking alternative candidates.
Other Democrats vying for the governorship include former Los angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former State Attorney General and US representative Xavier Becerra, and former State Controller Betty Yee. On the Republican side, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and former advisor to British Prime Minister David Cameron,Steve Hilton, are currently running. Developer Rick Caruso is reportedly considering entering the race as well.
The next Governor of California will face important challenges, including addressing an uncertain water supply, persistent educational disparities, a severe housing shortage, and widespread homelessness. The state also continues to grapple with unemployment, poverty, rising living costs, and recurring budget deficits.
With Trump back in office, California Democrats are prioritizing leadership willing to actively oppose the administration’s agenda. Swalwell intends to capitalize on his established anti-Trump reputation, utilizing his active social media presence and direct interaction style to appeal to voters.
recently, Swalwell was referred to the Justice Department for a potential federal inquiry by Bill Pulte, a housing official from the Trump administration, based on allegations of mortgage and tax fraud. Swalwell denies these allegations.Pulte has made similar accusations against other perceived political opponents of the president, including Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Swalwell also faced past scrutiny regarding an alleged relationship with a suspected Chinese intelligence operative a decade ago. The House Ethics Committee investigated the matter and closed it’s inquiry without finding any wrongdoing, though Republicans continue to raise the issue.
