Rio de Janeiro – Stephen Bate concluded his illustrious 12-year para-cycling career with a gold medal in teh men’s tandem individual pursuit at the Para-cycling Track World Championships, leading a surge of success for the British team.
Bate, alongside pilot Christopher Latham, secured victory by overtaking Italian duo Lorenzo Bernard and Paolo Toto.This win marks a fitting end to a career that has seen Bate become a five-time world champion and a five-time Paralympic medallist, solidifying his place as a leading figure in para-cycling.
The triumph is particularly poignant as it occurred in Rio de Janeiro, the site of Bate’s earlier Paralympic success with former pilot Adam Duggleby in 2016, where they won gold in both the individual pursuit and road time trial. Bate previously won individual pursuit silver at his final Paralympic Games in Paris last summer, also with Latham.
Saturday proved to be a golden day for Great Britain, with 21-year-old Archie atkinson reclaiming the men’s C4 10km scratch race title. Elizabeth jordan and pilot Dannielle Khan also contributed to the medal haul, successfully defending their women’s B 1km time trial title.
Finlay Graham added to the British success with a silver medal in the men’s C3 elimination race, while Kadeena Cox secured silver in the women’s C4 Sprint Race.
As of Saturday, great Britain’s overall medal count stands at seven gold, five silver, and five bronze.
