by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Tbilisi, Georgia Spain defeated Georgia 2-0 on Friday, extending their⁣ remarkable unbeaten streak in World Cup qualifying matches to 28 consecutive games – all non-pleasant contests. The victory also maintains Spain’s perfect home record in⁢ World ‌Cup qualification,a feat unmatched by any other nation.

The Spanish team dominated possession and attacking opportunities throughout the match. Despite a strong performance ⁣from ‌Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, Spain eventually broke through in the second half with a ‍powerful free kick from Mikel Oyarzabal.⁢ oyarzabal had ⁤previously been denied by Mamardashvili earlier in the match, as had teammate Ferran Torres.

Prior to Oyarzabal’s goal, Pedro Porro repeatedly ⁣tested the Georgian defense with risky crosses, and Merino had a header go wide. The first half saw Spain control the⁢ play, limiting Georgia’s offensive threats Kvaratskhelia and Mikautadze.

Following the 2-0 lead, Spain’s coach, De la ‌Fuente, ⁣substituted key players including Pedri, Oyarzabal, and Porro, giving playing time to Borja Iglesias, Llorente, and Barrios.

Statistics specialist MisterChip‍ highlighted the significance of the win, stating, “Spain reaches 28 consecutive NON-friendly matches without losing and remains the ONLY TEAM ON THE PLANET that has never lost a World Cup qualifying match at home.”

The ‍win keeps Spain firmly in contention for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
