Streamer Shroud Criticizes The Game Awards Nominations, Citing “Rigged” Process After Arc Raiders Snub
Popular streamer Tyler “Shroud” Grubb voiced strong criticism of The Game Awards nominations following the proclamation, alleging the event is “rigged” after Arc Raiders received minimal recognition. Shroud,a known fan of the free-to-play cooperative third-person shooter developed by Embark Studios, reacted to the nominations on Steam, expressing his frustration.
“Another time, another year, another rigged year. Its madness,” Shroud stated. His dismay intensified when Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze-originally released on the Wii U in 2017 and later ported-received a nomination for Game of the Year. “Who the hell plays Donkey Kong Bananza? Nobody plays Donkey Kong Bananza. Nobody. It’s insane,” he reportedly said, seemingly confusing the title with Donkey Kong Country: tropical Freeze.
Shroud further suggested the judging panel is averse to innovative gaming experiences, specifically AI-powered titles like Arc Raiders, claiming “the world is simply not ready.” He implied the jury favored “safe cards” and lacked courage in their selections. Arc Raiders did receive a nomination in an unspecified category, which Shroud acknowledged as a minor consolation.
Gamereactor, which previously reviewed Arc Raiders favorably, noted there is no evidence to support Shroud’s claims of a rigged event. The Game Awards nominations are determined by a jury comprised of both game journalists and industry professionals. The outlet suggests Shroud’s reaction stems from disappointment that his preferred game was overlooked.
