Pia Sundhage Steps Down as Switzerland Women’s National Team Coach
Zurich, Switzerland – Pia Sundhage has unexpectedly resigned as head coach of the Swiss women’s national soccer team, effective promptly. The move comes after she was informed by the Swiss Football association (SFV) that her contract, wich was set to expire in December, would not be renewed.
Sundhage, 65, expressed her surprise at the decision. ”I am surprised,” she stated on the SFV website. “I would have liked to continue this journey. I respect the decision of the Swiss Football Association, and I wish the team and Swiss football all the best – and that the passion we felt this summer continues.”
The Swedish coach took the helm of the Swiss national team in 2024, guiding them to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s European Championship hosted in Switzerland this summer. Prior to leading Switzerland, Sundhage held national team coaching positions with Sweden, Brazil, and the United States.
The SFV acknowledged Sundhage’s contributions in a statement, noting she “took over the team in 2024 during a challenging period and led them through an unforgettable EC in our contry.” SFV chairman peter Knäbel added, “Together with the players and the staff, she laid the foundation for a promising future in Swiss women’s football. We thank Pia and her coaching staff and wish them all the best in the future.”
