OMAHA, neb. (AP) – A man is dead and three Omaha police officers were wounded Wednesday following a series of shootings that began with an attack at a grocery store and ended in a confrontation at a gas station.
Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said the suspect, a man in his 20s, initially shot a 61-year-old man multiple times in the chest around noon at a local grocery store. Officers identified the suspect’s vehicle and tracked it to a gas station.
Upon arrival, officers observed the suspect enter a restroom. After additional units arrived, they ordered the suspect to exit. He emerged firing, striking one officer before retreating back inside.
A bystander safely exited the restroom before officers again ordered the suspect out, leading to a second exchange of gunfire. Two more officers were wounded – one by a bullet, another by shrapnel. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect.
“This is a very risky day involving this suspect in the city of Omaha,” schmaderer said.All three officers sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The officer hit by shrapnel has as been released.The 61-year-old man shot at the grocery store remains in critical condition.
