Lyon Pursues Hans Hateboer to Bolster Defense Amidst African Cup of nations Absences
Lyon are in negotiations with Stade Rennais for the transfer of Dutch international hans Hateboer as a “joker” signing, according to data obtained by Foot Mercato. The move comes as OL prepares for a challenging January schedule – encompassing Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and Europa League – compounded by the impending departure of key defensive duo to the African Cup of Nations.
Currently, Lyon’s defensive options are limited to Ruben Kluivert and Téo Barisic. The potential arrival of the 31-year-old Hateboer offers experienced cover, especially as the player’s current situation at Rennes has seen limited playing time – just 22 minutes this season – and strained relations with coach Habib Beye. Hateboer, a veteran of the Frédéric Massara era at Rennes, is under contract until June 2026 and can play both centrally and on the right side of defense. While the transfer isn’t finalized, discussions are progressing, and Hateboer is reportedly enthusiastic about joining Lyon.
