Oklahoma superintendent Ryan Walters resigns Amidst Controversy
Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters announced his resignation on November 21, 2024, effective immediately. The departure follows a period marked by escalating controversies surrounding his policies and leadership, including disputes over curriculum, teacher licensing, and the use of state funds.
Walters’ tenure, beginning in 2023, was consistently shadowed by criticism. He faced scrutiny for proposals to place bibles in public school classrooms and for initiatives aimed at teaching election conspiracy theories alongside historical content. He also implemented “woke-tests” for teachers transferring from states considered politically liberal, developed in partnership with PragerU, before granting them licenses to teach in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond released a statement following the resignation, characterizing the period under Walters and Governor Kevin Stitt as “an embarrassment to our state.” Drummond cited the “mishandling of pandemic relief funds” – referencing instances where funds where reportedly used for purchases like Xboxes and refrigerators – and consistently low test scores as key failures. He further noted that Oklahoma ranks 50th in education despite Governor stitt’s stated goal of reaching a Top Ten ranking.
“Ever since gov. Stitt appointed Ryan Walters to serve as Secretary of Education, we have witnessed a stream of never-ending scandal and political drama,” Drummond stated. “Even worse, test scores and reading proficiency are at historic lows. It’s time for a State Superintendent of Public Instruction who will actually focus on quality instruction in our public schools.”
The resignation comes as walters faced increasing pressure and potential investigations into his conduct. The Attorney general’s office is expected to begin unwinding policies implemented during Walters’ leadership.
