Two individuals were arrested Thursday in Paraguay for the illegal trafficking of a night monkey, a species protected under the country’s environmental laws. The joint operation, conducted by the Military Intelligence Battalion, the Ministry of the Habitat and Sustainable Advancement (MADES), the Public Ministry, and the National Police, underscores growing efforts to combat wildlife crime in the region.
The seized Aotus trivirgatus, commonly known as a night monkey, represents a significant loss to biodiversity and highlights the ongoing threat to endangered species. Illegal wildlife trafficking fuels a black market that disrupts ecosystems and can contribute to the spread of zoonotic diseases. The arrested individuals now face legal proceedings, and the rescued animal will recieve specialized care, signaling a commitment to both enforcement and rehabilitation.
Ruth centurion and Andres Gonzalez were identified as the individuals allegedly involved in the trafficking operation. Following their arrest, thay were transferred to the Luque 3rd Subpolice Station, where they remain at the disposal of the Public Ministry as the legal process unfolds.
The rescued night monkey is currently being transported to a specialized care center where veterinarians will assess it’s health and provide necessary treatment. Authorities will focus on the animal’s rehabilitation and protection, adhering to established protocols for wildlife recovery.
