NFL suspends bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase One Game for On-Field Incident
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has been suspended one game without pay by the NFL for spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers safety Jalen Ramsey during Sunday’s game, the league announced. The suspension stems from a violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which prohibits “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”
This disciplinary action follows a recent precedent set by the NFL’s handling of a similar incident involving Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter earlier this season. Carter was penalized with a fine equivalent to a game check after being ejected for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in Week 1. While Carter did not appeal that decision, Chase has the right to do so. any appeal will be heard by one of three jointly appointed NFL/NFLPA hearing officers: Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson.
The NFL treated Carter’s ejection as the equivalent of a one-game suspension, assessing a fine for the missed playing time. Chase’s suspension means he will miss the bengals’ upcoming game against the New England Patriots.
Bengals coach Zac Taylor acknowledged the incident Monday, suggesting Chase “crossed a line,” according to NBC Sports. Video evidence appearing to show Chase spitting toward Ramsey also surfaced following the game.
The NFL has increasingly scrutinized unsportsmanlike conduct, and this suspension signals a firm stance against such behavior on the field. the expedited appeal process means a final decision regarding Chase’s suspension is expected within the next day or so.
