NASA to Unveil New Images of Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS in Live Broadcast
WASHINGTON – NASA will present the frist images of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS in a live press conference on Wednesday, November 19, at 3 p.m. ET (8 p.m. in the UK / 9 p.m.CET in Spain). The event will be streamed live, offering the public a first look at data collected from multiple NASA missions focused on this rare celestial visitor.
Discovered on July 1, 2025, by the ATLAS observatory, 3I/ATLAS is only the third interstellar comet ever detected within our solar system, following 1I/’Oumuamua (2017) and 2I/Borisov (2019). This provides scientists with an unprecedented opportunity to study a comet originating from outside our solar system and gain insights into the composition and formation of planetary systems around other stars.
The comet reached its closest approach to the Sun on October 29, passing within approximately 130 million miles (210 million kilometers). It recently made a close flyby of Mars on October 3. The newly released images are expected to reveal how the comet’s activity has changed as it journeyed through the inner solar system. 3I/ATLAS will safely pass Earth on December 19 at a distance of roughly 170 million miles (270 million kilometers).
Data contributing to the images will come from both spacecraft and ground-based observatories. NASA personnel involved in the directorate include Amit Kshatriya, Nicky fox, Shawn Domagal-Goldman, and Tom Statler.
