Shein Faces Potential Ban in France as MPs Demand Action
Paris, France – Over 80 French MPs have signed a resolution calling for a ban on the fast-fashion retailer Shein within France, citing concerns over its impact on health, domestic employment, and the surroundings. The proposed resolution, tabled this week in the National Assembly, seeks increased pressure on the platform and will be examined by lawmakers on Wednesday.
the move comes amid escalating scrutiny of shein’s practices, including recent fines totaling 191 million euros for false promotions and misleading facts.Concurrently, the company is facing legal action before the Paris judicial court, where a ruling will determine whether the site will be suspended in France following the finding of sales of child-like sex dolls and category A weapons. Shein previously postponed a summons to appear before a fact-finding mission on imported product controls, citing a conflicting legal hearing.
The resolution, supported by deputies from across the political spectrum excluding groups LFI, RN, and UDR, reflects growing anxieties about the rise of “ultra-fast fashion” and its consequences. Critics argue Shein’s business model relies on exploitative labor practices, generates massive textile waste, and undermines French businesses. The call for a ban represents a significant escalation in efforts to regulate the platform and address the broader issues associated with its operations.
Shein has already received three fines this year in France totaling 191 million euros, notably for false promotions and misleading information. The company was initially summoned to appear before the justice system and parliament on November 26, but the meeting was postponed to december 2 due to a prior legal commitment.
