New York City FC upset the top-seeded Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Sunday night, advancing to the Eastern Conference final of the MLS playoffs. Maxi Moralez scored the lone goal in the 27th minute, securing the victory for NYC FC.
The result marks a significant end to Philadelphia’s season,as the Union,winners of the 2025 Supporters’ Shield,suffered only their second loss at Subaru Park all year. Simultaneously occurring, new York City FC advances, continuing their playoff run and eliminating a major contender.
Moralez’s goal came after a perfectly timed run onto a through ball from Nicolás Fernández, beating goalkeeper Andre Blake with a rolling shot.Blake finished with two saves before being substituted in the 60th minute due to a hamstring injury, replaced by Andrew Rick who added one save.
NYC FC goalkeeper Matt Freese was crucial in preserving the lead, recording five saves, including a key stop on a first-touch shot by Frankie Westfield in the 74th minute. Despite Philadelphia dominating possession and outshooting NYC FC 20-6 they were unable to find the equalizer. The Union held a 9-3 shot advantage in the first half.
