SYDNEY – A measles alert has been issued for central Sydney and the city’s airport following confirmation that an infected individual from Queensland travelled to multiple locations while contagious, NSW Health announced Thursday (Nov 13).
The confirmed case visited several Sydney locations between November 8 and 10, including a concert attended by approximately 70,000 people. Health officials are advising anyone who visited locations including Sydney Airport, the central business district, the concert venue, and trains in Sydney’s inner-west during that period to monitor for symptoms until November 28.
“It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after exposure to measles,” stated Jeremy mcanulty, Executive Director of Health Protection NSW. He urged individuals experiencing symptoms - fever, sore eyes, and a cough followed by a rash – to contact their doctor or hospital in advance of their visit to avoid potential spread in waiting rooms.
Queensland Health also reported that the individual spent time in central Brisbane and at the Brisbane Airport while infectious.
Australia has already seen a significant increase in measles cases this year. According to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, 153 confirmed cases have been reported nationwide in 2025, exceeding the 115 cases recorded in the previous five years combined. Of these, 30 cases are in Queensland and 28 are in NSW.
