Maine Women’s Soccer Reaches America East Semifinals with 2-1 Victory over New Hampshire
DURHAM, N.H.- The University of Maine Black Bears women’s soccer team secured a 2-1 win against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats on Sunday, propelling them to the America East Championship semifinal round for the fourth year in a row. Goals from Jordane Pinette and Gillian Rovers sealed the victory, extending Maine’s triumphant postseason run.
This win marks a significant milestone for head coach Scott Atherley, who achieved his 200th career victory leading the Maine women’s soccer program-becoming only the second America East coach to reach this benchmark with a single program. The Black Bears now prepare to face top-seeded Binghamton in the semifinals, continuing their quest for an America East title and a potential NCAA tournament berth.
The Black Bears took an early lead when Jordane Pinette finished a cross from Julie Lossius. Twenty minutes later, Gillian Rovers scored the game-winning goal, deflecting a ball from Madison Michaud into the net. Maine dominated possession throughout the match, outshooting New Hampshire 21-10 and holding a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, as well as a 5-2 lead in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Elena Barenberg recorded three saves, improving her season record to 43-4-2. The victory brings Maine’s all-time series record against New Hampshire to 20-19-4. Pinette’s goal was her second of the season, while Rovers’ marked her first and the first game-winner of her career.
Maine will travel to Binghamton on Thursday, November 5, for a 5 p.m.semifinal matchup at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
