Sidon, Lebanon – September 11, 2025 – Security tensions flared in the Al-Mansheya neighborhood of Ain al-Hilweh camp in Sidon today following an attempt by a group of young men to set fire to the home of Lebanese artist Fadel Shaker, according to reports from Lebanese media outlet Liban Dibite and local sources.
The incident stems from objections to Shaker’s recent return to the artistic scene. sources identified Mohamed Gamal Hamad, recently released from prison and known for impulsive behavior, and Mahmoud mansour, a leader within the “Muslim Youth” institution, as participants in the attempted arson.
Shaker has resided in Al-Mansheya for several years. While his return to music initially drew criticism from some militant groups operating in the area, sources indicate the dispute extends beyond religious objections to his profession. These groups allegedly received monthly payments from Shaker for protection within the neighborhood and reportedly increased their financial demands following his recent artistic success.
The incident is being described by sources as a pressure tactic to extract increased “alternate” or “monthly” payments from Shaker.
Prominent wanted individual Haitham Al-Shaabi intervened to de-escalate the situation, leading to a meeting with stakeholders. A preliminary agreement was reached allowing Shaker to complete his current album commitments, with the understanding he will cease performing artistic activities within the camp afterward.
this is not the first time Shaker has faced threats related to his artistic endeavors. together, observers have noted a recurring pattern of media scrutiny and the resurfacing of past controversies coinciding with Shaker’s successes, prompting questions about the motivations behind these campaigns.
