Kia Drives into Japan with New Electric Van Lineup, Global Expansion Plans
Tokyo, Japan – Kia is making a significant push into the Japanese market with the upcoming launch of its PV5 Passenger and Cargo electric vans in 2026, marking the brand’s first-ever EV offering in the contry. The move is part of a broader global strategy that includes expanding its dealer and service network and targeting 250,000 annual electric van sales by the end of the decade.
This expansion into Japan represents more than just a new vehicle launch; it signals Kia’s ambition to introduce a novel approach to mobility within the country, addressing critical needs in logistics and transportation. The Japanese commercial vehicle sector currently has limited electric options, positioning kia to capitalize on a growing demand for sustainable solutions. Kia plans to bolster its presence with the addition of eight dealerships and 100 service centers over the next year, preparing for the PV5’s arrival and subsequent rollout of additional models.
the PV5, already available in Europe and South Korea, will be followed by a wheelchair-accessible version, the PV5 WAV, and the larger PV7 model in 2027. Beyond Japan, Kia intends to extend the PV5’s availability to the Middle East, Asia, and Africa in 2026.
“Kia’s entry into Japan is significant in that it goes beyond simply launching new cars and introduces a new form of mobility to Japanese society,” stated Sang Dae Kim, head of Kia’s PBV business.
kia anticipates its electric vans will help alleviate challenges such as increasing logistical demands, labor shortages, and transportation gaps in regional areas. the company aims to sell 250,000 electric vans annually by the end of the decade, with Japan expected to be a key contributor to that goal.
