Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández Will Remain in US, Wife Says, Citing Safety Concerns
New York – The wife of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández asserts he will remain in the United States, fearing for his safety should he return to Honduras.ana Hernández stated her husband, who was recently pardoned by former U.S. President Donald Trump after being convicted on drug trafficking and weapons charges, faces important danger back home.
Hernández was arrested and extradited to New York three months after leaving office to face federal charges alleging he conspired with major drug traffickers to establish a corrupt enterprise facilitating the shipment of tons of cocaine to the U.S. While he was convicted in March 2024,the pardon granted by Trump has created a complex situation regarding his future. His wife maintains the trial was politically motivated, based on “a testimony based on gossip,” and part of “a script promoted by the left.”
Prosecutors alleged hernández associated with “some of the world’s largest drug traffickers” to build a “brutally violent empire” centered on cocaine trafficking. Despite these accusations, Ana Hernández believes her husband was unjustly accused and that returning to Honduras under the current circumstances would be perilous. She has not specified the nature of the threats he faces.
