John Cena‘s Final Match Set: Gunther to Challenge at Saturday Night’s Main Event
STAMFORD, CT – December 6, 2025 – Gunther has earned the right to face John Cena in what is being billed as Cena’s final professional wrestling match. The matchup was confirmed following Gunther’s victory over LA Knight in the finals of the “Last Time Is now” tournament on tonight’s WWE SmackDown. The bout will headline the return of Saturday Night’s Main event on December 13, 2025.
The tournament was designed to determine Cena’s last opponent as he embarks on a farewell tour. While initially envisioned as a tribute to Cena’s career, the 16-time World champion requested the event instead focus on showcasing WWE’s current and rising stars.
The tournament final saw Knight deliver his signature BFT maneuver, but Gunther strategically broke the pinfall attempt by getting his foot to the bottom rope. gunther then secured the win by applying a cravat crossface, forcing Knight to submit.
Ahead of the December 13th event, Cena is scheduled to appear on insight with Chris Van vliet this Tuesday, December 9, to discuss his farewell tour and upcoming match against Gunther.
WWE has also announced additional matches for Saturday Night’s Main Event:
* Undisputed WWE Championship: Cody Rhodes will defend his title against either Oba Femi or Ricky Starks.
* Singles Match: Bayley will face Sol Ruca.
