Barcelona, Egypt – December 5, 2025 – The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Mediterranean Programme concluded a robust series of engagements at the COP24 Barcelona Convention – Cairo, solidifying its commitment to a sustainable and resilient future for the Mediterranean’s marine and coastal environments. Throughout the December 2-5 conference, IUCN Med showcased critical initiatives and fostered collaboration on pressing regional challenges.
The IUCN’s presence at COP24 Barcelona Convention - Cairo underscored the urgent need for integrated approaches to climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable economic development in the Mediterranean.Discussions and presentations centered on restoring vital ecosystems, strengthening species protection, enhancing marine protected area management, and fostering a thriving blue economy – all crucial for the region’s ecological health and the well-being of the communities that depend on it.
Key sessions led by IUCN Med included ”Restoring Mediterranean wetlands and forests: Technical innovations and governance for climate resilience” (17:45 – 18:45, Malachite I+II, Floor 2), and “From Science to action: Strengthening conservation and cooperation for priority Mediterranean species and habitats” (09:00 – 10:00, Astor plenary Hall, Floor 1). Further contributions focused on “advancing management effectiveness of marine protected areas in the Mediterranean” (13:00 - 14:00, Astor Plenary Hall, Floor 1) and “Pathways to a thriving Mediterranean blue economy: resilience, innovation, and sustainability” (14:00 – 15:00, Malachite I+II, Floor 2).
