Humanoid Robot Draws Crowds at Lucerne Christmas Market, Offers Glimpse into Robotics Future
LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND – A humanoid robot is turning heads at the lucerne Christmas market, captivating visitors with its ability to run, climb stairs, and navigate uneven terrain. The G1 robot, from Chinese manufacturer Unitree Robotics, is typically used for research and training at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, but is currently offering a unique experience to holiday shoppers.
The 127-centimeter tall, 35-kilogram robot represents a notable step forward in humanoid robotics, according to Professor Müller of the university. He likened the public’s reaction to seeing a car for the first time, calling it “epic.” While acknowledging the robot isn’t perfect – and that’s precisely its value – the G1 provides students with hands-on experience in understanding the real-world limitations, safety protocols, and engineering compromises inherent in the field.
The robot is being utilized in the Bachelor’s degree program in Digital Engineering, allowing students to program and test functions on a physical platform. The university acquired the G1 for approximately 10,000 Swiss francs, a cost that has since seen similar models reach around $6,000. Unitree Robotics specializes in creating these types of research and training robots.
Müller noted a range of reactions to the robot, stating, “there are children who cry, but also many who are very happy.” The demonstration at the Christmas market offers a public preview of the technology shaping the future of robotics and its potential integration into everyday life.
