Last-Minute Hosts: Experts Share Secrets for a Stress-Free Kiwi Christmas
Auckland, New Zealand – As new Zealanders gear up for summer celebrations, hosting a Christmas gathering can feel daunting. Experts Mathura-Jeffree (Colin) and Trudi Nelson (‘the Foodie’) recently shared advice on The Detail podcast for creating a harmonious and festive Christmas experience.
Nelson acknowledges dietary needs are common, noting most guests will bring their own provisions. However, she suggests simple inclusive options like a gluten-free dish of cherry tomatoes, cos lettuce, and feta - “like little red baubles on a bed of green.”
Both experts emphasize the importance of a positive attitude. Nelson advises hosts to “smile, smile and smile some more” before guests arrive, reminding them that a welcoming atmosphere is key, even without elaborate preparations. “You might not have thought of every dish, you might not have the fancy napkins, but if you smile and just welcome people…. it’s absolutely key.”
Colin stresses the need for “harmony” during the often-stressful holiday season, especially when family is staying. He suggests hosts “feed the energy of a collective” and avoid drawing attention to individual preferences – dismissing requests like “I can’t eat these kind of foods” or demands to “re-cater.”
Decorations should reflect a festive theme, ranging from “petite and small” to “splendid,” according to Colin. A wreath on the front door is considered essential, and Nelson suggests a unique activity: have guests place a decoration on the tree as they arrive.
Colin also highlighted a growing awareness of waste, advocating for recyclable decorations. Incorporating native New zealand flora like silver ferns and pohutukawa adds a local touch, but nelson advises against overdoing it, prioritizing a “calm and cruisy” atmosphere.
Nelson also touched on the reality that Christmas isn’t universally joyful, sharing she will be spending part of the season alone.she encourages those who can to open their doors to others, stating, “if you can open up your door to extras this time of year, then far out… do it.”
