Carolina, Puerto Rico - The Hofstra University women’s basketball team suffered a decisive 95-38 loss to #7 Maryland in the opening game of the 2025 Discover Puerto Rico shootout on Thursday. The defeat drops Hofstra’s season record to 1-4, while Maryland remains undefeated at 9-0.
This contest marked Hofstra’s first against a ranked opponent since November 27, 2015, when they faced #7 Oregon State, and the first-ever meeting between the Pride and the Terrapins. While a significant challenge, the game provides valuable experience for a Hofstra team building toward a competitive season in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Pride will continue tournament play Friday, seeking a rebound victory against east Carolina.
Maryland established control early, opening with a 10-0 run before Sana’a Garrett scored Hofstra’s first points at the 6:30 mark of the first quarter.The Terrapins maintained their dominance throughout the remainder of the game.
Olivia VanPatten led Hofstra in scoring with eight points and added three rebounds. Ema Karim distributed three assists, and Alarice Gooden contributed six points and two steals.Kaylene Smikle topped all scorers for Maryland with 13 points, while Ava McKennie led the Terrapins in rebounding with five.
hofstra will return to Coliseo Guillermo Angulo on Friday, November 28, to face East Carolina at 12:30 p.m. (ET)/1:30 p.m. (AT). The game will be streamed live on FloCollege. Additionally, Emma Von Essen scored six points against Maryland, bringing her career total to 28 points shy of 1,000.
