Rikard Grönborg Returns as Head Coach of Tre Kronor Amidst Uncertainty
STOCKHOLM – Rikard Grönborg is set to reclaim his position as head coach of the Swedish national ice hockey team, Tre Kronor, following the departure of Johan Hallam to a club in Switzerland, according to reports.The appointment marks a return for Grönborg, who previously led Tre Kronor to World Championship gold in both 2017 and 2018, and a bronze medal finish in the last two championships.
The move comes at a pivotal moment for Swedish hockey, as the team seeks to build upon recent successes and elevate its performance on the international stage. Tre Kronor has consistently been a contender, but two consecutive bronze medals have fueled a desire for renewed ambition. Grönborg’s extensive experience with the national program, spanning multiple age groups, positions him to immediately address the team’s needs and chart a course toward future victories.
Born June 8, 1968, in Huddinge, Stockholm, Grönborg’s coaching career includes roles as assistant national team captain for Tre kronor from 2011-2016 and as head coach from 2016-2019. He also captained the Junior Crowns from 2013-2016 and the Småkronorna from 2010-2013, securing a gold medal at the 2012 Junior World Championships as an assistant coach and a gold medal at the 2013 World Championships as an assistant coach.
Prior to accepting the Tre Kronor position,Grönborg served as head coach for tappara in Finland as 2023,and previously for ZSC Lions in Switzerland from 2019-2023,where he recently secured the Finnish championship in 2024. The Swedish Ice Hockey Association has yet to officially confirm the appointment, but sources indicate an proclamation is imminent.
