GrapheneOS to Expand Support Beyond Google Pixel Devices
[City, State] – [Date] – GrapheneOS, a privacy and security-focused mobile operating system, announced it is collaborating wiht a major Android smartphone vendor to officially support installation on devices beyond the Google Pixel line. Currently,GrapheneOS is primarily compatible with Pixel phones due to their open architecture and bootloader unlocking capabilities – a necessity for installing custom operating systems.
The project team revealed the partnership on reddit, stating they are working to maintain the operating system’s high security standards during the expansion. The focus will be on smartphones equipped with high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, chosen for their hardware-level security features and established driver support.
“These chips offer an ideal combination of performance, stability and security, as well as a robust ecosystem for features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GNSS and more,” the GrapheneOS development team stated.
While devices will not ship with GrapheneOS pre-installed, the manufacturer will permit official installation by users - a meaningful step, as most manufacturers restrict bootloader unlocking. The new compatible phones are expected to be priced similarly to current Google Pixel models, indicating a focus on the premium smartphone market, with global availability planned. Current Pixel devices will continue to receive support until the end of their lifecycle.
The developers also expressed concerns regarding recent changes to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) security update schedule, noting that quarterly critical updates may hinder their ability to maintain the operating system’s security levels.
This expansion marks a key development for GrapheneOS, positioning it as a leading secure Android option and demonstrating the potential for user privacy and freedom within the mobile landscape.
