Google Maps Expands Power Saving Mode for Navigation
Google Maps is rolling out a new power saving mode to a wider user base, allowing navigation to continue even with the phone’s display off. The feature, initially limited, aims to conserve battery life during navigation sessions - particularly useful for cyclists and public transport users. Currently, the mode functions exclusively in portrait orientation.
This update addresses a common pain point for smartphone users: battery drain during navigation. By moving core navigation functions to the lock screen, Google Maps significantly reduces power consumption, extending the usability of the app during longer journeys. The rollout is gradual, with the feature becoming available to more users over time.
To activate power saving mode in google Maps:
- Open Google Maps.
- Go to Settings.
- Scroll to Navigation.
- Look for Power Saving Mode under the Driving Options section.
Alternatively, a pop-up will appear when requesting driving instructions, offering a direct link to the settings page.
Once enabled, the feature works as follows:
- Start turn-by-turn navigation in Google Maps.
- Press the power button to turn off the display.
- Navigation continues on the lock screen in power saving mode.
- To exit, tap the screen or press the power button again.
Currently, power saving mode is exclusive to the Pixel 10 series. Google has not announced plans to expand the feature to older Pixel models or other Android devices.
