Cancer and Dementia Top Health Fears for Germans, Survey Reveals
Berlin – cancer is the disease most feared by Germans, with over two-thirds (69 percent) expressing worry, according to a new survey by Forsa commissioned by DAK-Gesundheit. Alzheimer’s and dementia follow closely behind, causing concern for 54 percent of respondents.
The survey also highlighted significant anxieties around physical injuries, with 46 percent fearing serious accidents and 45 percent worrying about stroke. heart attack concerns were present for 39 percent of those surveyed.
Despite these fears, a majority of Germans report engaging in preventative health behaviors.Eighty-four percent exercise regularly, 78 percent prioritize a healthy diet, and 77 percent abstain from or limit alcohol consumption and smoking.Vaccination rates are also high, with 76 percent reporting regular immunizations. Cancer prevention screenings are utilized by 63 percent of the population.
Notably, a gender gap exists in preventative care. while 77 percent of women participate in cancer prevention screenings, only 49 percent of men do.
Mental health concerns are also rising, with depression and burnout ranking as the seventh most feared illness overall. However, fear of these conditions is considerably higher among younger demographics, with 47 percent of 14-29 year olds expressing concern compared to a national average of 31 percent.
