Two Films Addressing Gaza Conflict Nominated for European film Awards
Berlin – Two films grappling with the realities of the Gaza conflict are set to compete for the prestigious Best Film award at the upcoming European Film Awards, signaling a critically important moment for politically charged cinema on the continent. Nadav Lapid’s “Yes,” and “Gaza Mon Amour,” directed by tarik Saleh, are among the 15 films vying for the top prize.
The nominations reflect a growing trend of European cinema engaging with complex geopolitical issues, and come amid heightened global scrutiny of the ongoing conflict. The European Film Awards, presented annually by the European Film Academy, recognize outstanding achievements in European cinema and carry considerable weight within the industry, potentially boosting international recognition and distribution for the nominated films. Winners will be announced December 9th in Berlin.
Beyond the Best Film nominations, Israeli talent is also recognized in other categories. Idan Weiss is nominated for Best European Actor for his portrayal of Franz Kafka in Agnieszka Holland’s “Franz.” Natalie portman is a producer of the animated film ”Arco,” which is also nominated for Outstanding Picture.
Israeli films have previously been honored by the European Film Academy, including Eran Kolirin’s “The Band’s Visit” (2007 Discovery prize, Sasson Gabai Best Actor), Shmuelik Me’uz’s “Lebanon” (2010 Discovery of the Year, Best Cinematography), and ari Folman’s “The Congress” (2013 Best Animated Feature).
