European Parliament Set to Vote on Human Rights, deforestation, and Gender Equality
Brussels – The European Parliament will today address transnational repression of human rights defenders, consider streamlining the EU Deforestation Regulation, and vote on a strategy to advance gender equality across Europe. These key issues are among a series of votes scheduled for MEPs, alongside decisions regarding disaster relief for Spain and France, expanded powers for the European Maritime Safety Agency, and international agreements on trade and financial transparency.
meps will first vote on Parliament’s inaugural report focused on the transnational repression faced by human rights defenders, following a plenary presentation yesterday. A vote to fast-track a proposal simplifying the EU Deforestation Regulation – designed to ensure products sold within the EU are not linked to deforestation – is also on the agenda. If approved, a vote on the proposal’s specifics will occur during the November 24-27 plenary session. Additionally, Parliament will vote on a report outlining steps to bolster gender equality throughout Europe, building on yesterday’s debate.
Beyond these core issues, MEPs will also vote on: mobilizing the European Union Solidarity Fund for Spain and France following natural disasters in 2024 and 2025; granting new authorities to the European Maritime Safety Agency; conserving marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction; updating population and housing statistics; establishing a framework for business income taxation (BEFIT); ratifying the digital Trade Agreement between the EU and Singapore; amending financial account information exchange protocols wiht Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland; and confirming Nikolaos Milionis (Greece) and Pierre Moscovici (France) as members of the European Court of Auditors.
