DRC Stuns Nigeria, Advances to world Cup qualifying Playoff
KINSHASA, DRC – November 16, 2025 – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) defeated Nigeria in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time, securing their place in the intercontinental tournament and moving within striking distance of a second-ever FIFA World Cup berth.The victory marks a historic moment for Congolese football, rekindling hopes of returning to the world Cup stage for the first time since 1974.
The match, a tense affair from the outset, saw Nigeria take an early lead in the third minute with a goal from Frank Onyeka following a missed intervention from Arthur Masuaku. However, the Congolese Leopards responded through Elia, who capitalized on a failed tackle by Wilfred Ndidi to equalize in the 32nd minute (1-1).
The second half saw Congo-Kinshasa gain control of possession, though struggling to create clear-cut chances. Nigeria’s attack faltered after the halftime substitution of Victor Osimhen, who appeared diminished and was replaced by akor Adams. the Super Eagles failed to register another shot on goal for the remainder of regulation and extra time.
Despite late pressure,including a potential goal ruled out for a foul in the 108th minute and a miraculous save by Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali on a Chancel Mbemba header in the 121st minute,neither team could break the deadlock.
The match ultimately hinged on a nerve-wracking penalty shootout. A pivotal goalkeeping change saw Timothy Fayulu replace Lionel Mpazi for the shootout, and Fayulu proved decisive, saving Moses Simon’s attempt. Nwabali also made two crucial saves, denying Moutoussamy and Tuanzebe. The shootout culminated in a final save from Fayulu and a prosperous penalty from Mbemba, sealing the victory for the DRC.
